Read the Media Magazine feature 'Representation old and new'. This is in MM51 on page 6 - go to our Media Magazine archive to find the article. Complete the following tasks:

Representation: Traditional, "old world" versions of Britishness are frequently used in media and popular culture, which can fail to reflect contemporary, multicultural Britain. This often equates "British" with "English" and highlights a white, monocultural view.
Watch the clip from Luther that we studied in class (Season 1, Episode 1 - minute 7.40-10.00 - you'll need your Greenford Google login to access the clip). Now answer these final two questions:
5) Write a paragraph analysing the dominant and alternative representations you can find in the clip from Luther.
Dominant-male character is seen as weak and caring since he waits around for the girl.Furthermore his facial expressions display his gentleness for the female chatacter.the female character is seen as slightly in power at the start as she dominates the guy within the extract.
Alternative-it could be argued that the man is highly dominant within the extract and the women within the extract is attempting to assert dominance.
6) Write a paragraph applying a selection of our representation theories to the clip from Luther. Our summary of each theory may help you here:
Perkins: some stereotypes can be positive or true
In the extract it displays that some stereotypes can be positive such as female empowerment and women asserting dominance within an industry.Furthermore in the extract a lot of stereotypes are able to be true because they are communicated through each character.
