Audience theory 1

 1) Read this Mail Online article about the effects of videogames. How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?

People who play violent games tend to become more violent and aggressive

2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone criticise this front page?

This links to the hypodermic needle model. This is because it displays how young people are addicted towards video games and the fact that it consumes them easily. However people may criticise the front page because it is promoting bad behaviour.

Two-step flow model

1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader?

The two step flow model is when opinion leaders create a message to people and everybody around them consumes this opinion and follows it

2) How do celebrities like Taylor Swift fit into the two-step flow model?

Taylor swift fits into the two step flow model as she is an opinion leader because her fans follow her

3) In your opinion, is the two-step flow theory still relevant today?

Yes,it is due to people consuming media a lot more. As well as this a lot of creators try to become opinion leaders due to the fact that they want to build a fan base

Uses and Gratifications theory

1) For each of the four categories, write about one media text (e.g. film, TV programme, newspaper etc.) that fits that particular audience use or pleasure. Make sure you explain WHY it fits the category and use images or clips to illustrate your points. The first one is done for you.

Diversion: Film - Blinded By The Light. Entertaining and offering escapism for fans of Bruce Springsteen or anyone that enjoys coming of age films or culture-clash comedies.
Personal Relationships:top boy due to the influence of black people always being seen as criminals
Personal Identity:prison break due to the fact that people have been in prison before and can relate to it
Surveillance:blue whale documentary as we can see the influence of how animals live on the planet

Dependency theory

1) Do you agree that audiences have become dependent on the media? What evidence or examples can you provide to support your view?

Yes I do believe that the audience is dependent on the media. This is due to how high peoples screen times are and how much time people spend on social media

2) How has the growth of new and digital technology in the last 15 years changed people's dependency on the media? Is this a new problem?

The growth of social media has changed dependency. This is because people are becoming less dependent on social media due to there being a lot of biased content produced

3) Reflecting on your own media use, how does your media consumption impact on your emotions? Does the media have an overall positive or negative impact on your health and wellbeing? What is your average screentime and how does this impact on your mood?

I believe that the media has a negative impact on me due to there always being biased content around as well as the fact that people on social media are influencing people in a negative way

Extension tasks A/A*

If you're interested in the debate regarding videogames and the impact on children read this blog on the subject. What is your opinion on whether videogames are positive or negative?

I believe that video games has a positive and negative impact on society. This is because some video games are educational and help educate children. However other video games are very aggressive and influence kids in a very negative way. Restrictions are also very useless and mean that children can easily bypass the restrictions available and play violent video games
